Here's a true story for you:
The 60 km drive into the mountains took almost three hours. The last 30 km clicked away at snail’s pace on a treacherous dirt road, barely wide enough for one car, as we laboured higher and higher up into the mountains. Eventually we ran out of road and had to continue the journey on foot. The short walk now led down a winding path into the green foothills of the valley below. Eventually we came to a clearing where we were met by a young man who took us into a sparsely furnished hut, devoid of electricity and other modern amenities we take for granted. An old lady was sitting on the floor waiting for us. She spoke no English.

After some introductions, I was soon surrounded by mounds of Durban Poison, ranging from freshly picked to well cured, being brought into the hut by the old lady’s son and her two daughters. The sweet smell of fresh green weed saturated the air. As I inspected each new batch, making my selections, a pipe was loaded with freshly picked Durban Poison and my guide and the young man and I smoked, passing the pipe around. Characteristically, I felt almost no effect from the Durban Poison. After we’d concluded negotiations, and I paid for my selected weed, we smoked another pipe. This time, I felt mildly stoned.
We concluded formalities, and I stepped out of the darkened hut into the glaring sunlight.

The walk back to the car soon brought on the full effects of the Durban Poison…
As we wound our way up the path out of the green valley, the heat from the African sun was intense and I was thankful for the bottle of ice cold water I’d collected from the mountain stream.

As we walked, my legs seemed much longer than they really were, and there was a spring in my step. The tall grass was stark and vivid in the bright sunlight and the colours and sounds and sweet smells of the African bush jumped out at me with renewed intensity.
I found myself enjoying the walk, which to all intents and purposes should have been quite tedious in the heat. I paused on the hillside for a minute to gulp down a mouthful of that sweet mountain water and reflect on the vast beauty of the Valley Of a Thousand Hills…

And Heaven in a wild flower…
To hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour…

The walk back seemed much longer than the one we’d taken into the valley, and I was thankful when we came over the rise and arrived at the car.
The drive back with a trunk full of weed was almost surreal and scary because roadblocks are not uncommon.
Needless to say, I was relieved when we eventually got to the freeway and the beautiful blue Indian Ocean came back into view…
